Amygdala [greek amygdale = almond] corpus amygdaloideum, section of the limbic system, located pairwise (pl. Amygdalae) in the temporal lobe.

Klüver-Bucy-syndrome (1939), term rooted in removal of the lower temporal lobe including both amygdalae of rhesus monkeys. Subjects showed up several behavioural abnormality like for example visual agnosia (inability to recognize objects or persons) and absence of fear, aggession and emotion.
Amygdala receives stimuli of each sensorial system and is centre of analysis and evaluation of input sensation and emotion. Reading anxious faces amygdala shows high activity. Autonomic nervous system is under its influence.
